The Checks Away from the Border pilot started in May 2024 and was paused ahead of the general election. This case study covers the design work up to that point.

After Brexit, the UK introduced new checks on animal products from the EU. Under the Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), this means longer waits and higher costs for traders at the border.
Defra's Accredited Trusted Trader Scheme (ATTS) tests ways to reduce that burden without weakening biosecurity, food safety or public health. I worked on the Checks Away from the Border (CAB) module, which lets trusted traders check consignments at their own premises.

CAB moves the check from the border to the trader's premises.

Role: Service Designer, working with a user researcher, content designer and junior designers, inside a combined policy and design team.

Show how checks could safely move away from the border, and what that would look like as a service that policy, operations and traders could all agree on.
The CAB pilot started in May 2024 and was paused ahead of the general election. I handed the blueprint, the roadmap and the supporting material to Defra, who decide what happens next.
